Atilla Kasap
Dr. Atilla Kasap is a law and technology academic, endorsed by the British Academy as an exceptional talent in recognition of his contributions to the field. He secured prestigious funding from the Japan Patent Office and conducted research as an Invited Researcher at the Institute of Intellectual Property in Tokyo between 2025 and 2026. He previously worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the law of digitization and trade at the University of Sussex, based at the Center for Inclusive Trade Policy, between 2023 and 2024. Since 2020, he has served as an Assistant Professor of Law at Ondokuz Mayıs University, Ali Fuad Başgil Faculty of Law. His legal education spans three jurisdictions across both civil law and common law systems, with an SJD from Wake Forest University in the United States, an LLM with distinction from Queen Mary University of London in the United Kingdom, and an LLB from Istanbul University in Türkiye. He is a qualified lawyer registered with the Istanbul Bar Association and worked as a lawyer in Istanbul during the early stages of his career.
Dr. Kasap’s research bridges the gap between emerging technologies and the law, focusing on the intersections of intellectual property, artificial intelligence and robotics, legal liability for emerging technologies, and data privacy. He draws on doctrinal, comparative and interdisciplinary methods to ensure both breadth and depth in his work. His monograph, Autonomous Vehicles: Tracing the Locus of Regulation and Liability, was published by Edward Elgar in 2022. His recent journal articles include “Regulating Critical Technologies: National Security and Intellectual Property” in the Journal of World Intellectual Property (2026, with Prof Phoebe Li), “Philosophical Grounds for Regulating the Lawful Operation of Autonomous Vehicles” in the International Review of Law, Computers and Technology (2026), “Patentability of AI-Generated Inventions under Turkish Law in Light of DABUS Decisions” in the Digital Law Review (2025, with Dr. Büşra Şahin Aydın), “States’ Approaches to Autonomous Vehicle Technology in Light of Federal Law” in the Ohio State Technology Law Journal (2023), “Artificial Intelligence Entities and Legal Personality under Turkish Law” in Zeitschrift für Türkisch-Deutsche Rechtsstudien (2022), and “Copyright and Creative Artificial Intelligence Systems” in the Wake Forest Journal of Business and Intellectual Property Law (2019).
Dr. Kasap has been a regular participant at the British and Irish Law Education and Technology Association conferences, where his work was nominated for the BILETA–EJLT Prize in 2024, 2025 and 2026. He serves as a peer reviewer for the International Journal of Law and Information Technology, Digital Society, the Journal of World Intellectual Property, American Philosophical Quarterly, and Media and Communication, as well as for national Turkish journals. He has been awarded Fellowship of Advance HE (FHEA), is a member of AIPPI, the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, and has been admitted to practice as a lawyer in Istanbul since 2014.
